Description:
With the Cleopatra theme winding down and Father’s Day coming up quickly, June 21, the next theme is “Jewelry For Him.” Let’s mix things up a bit and deviate from making women’s jewelry and let’s make men’s jewelry!
Honor our husbands, dads, uncles, brothers – the men in our lives – there is nothing like receiving a handmade gift from the heart.
Jewelry Expressions now has a new format! We want to encourage this event to not only stimulate our creativity but also to be a learning experience for all. The new format will require that you work from a JewelryLessons tutorial. Choose any tutorial you like – beginner, intermediate, or advanced – free tutorials or low cost tutorials – and unleash your creativity! Here are some suggestions to get you started on your special Jewelry For Him:
1. If you are a beginning user, you might want to select a tutorial that uses a technique that you are just learning, make a practice piece first, and then create your jewelry exactly as it is written.
2. If you are an intermediate user, how about choosing a tutorial that is a new technique for you, make a practice piece, and then make your piece of jewelry exactly as the tutorial.
3. If you are an advanced user, you could choose a tutorial and just jump right in and create your final piece without a practice piece. Or maybe make a practice piece and then mix things up a bit by creating a derivative of the tutorial – maybe a different shape.
4. Are you a teacher or working towards being a teacher? If you have written a tutorial that is not yet published, maybe this is a good time to submit it to JewelryLessons, get it published, and make a theme piece. This will be a great opportunity for users to try out your new tutorial, too!
So get those creative juices stirred up and let’s all create something heartwarming for our men!

Hello Jodi,
I like the way that you varied the homework assignment to accommodate a variety of skill levels. I do that in my math classes too ( woops! I mentioned the M-word! ). I also like the way these events have some constraint, like a theme or the requirement to follow a new tutorial. When we are forced to work within some restrictions, we find ourselves applying our creativity in directions we may not have otherwise gone. Thanks for the project!

Off the top of my head I think this challenge is perfect for those who want to try some chain maille. Or large hole beaded bead(s) in manly colors on leather cord or rubber tubing. Hmmmmmmm........
yes yes Dana, and for example viking knitt mixed with leather...????
Florence, we thought exactly that, to have a variety to different skill levels while you make your design. It is good also the posibility to come with a tutorial and recieve good $$. Many people want to make jewelry for a guy, that looks masculine and that they really could love it. , no no they don't love things. They like things, hehe.
Hey Florence,
Actually, the idea of implementing tutorials into the themes was a collaboration of Eni, Fran, and me - you stated it really well as did Fran - to bring in hopefully some new tutorials and to further help out with ideas and learning new techniques!

I like this idea. I always have males wanting to buy but I can never think of anything to make that is sexy yet masculine. I'd love to see some tuts on "man jewelry".
THe Viking knit and leather cord sounds super hot, sexy. I might just have to try that!

Jill,
That was my thought too - chainmaille. I love the look of it. I tried it a few years ago but gave up because I just never can seem to close jump rings very well! Might be time to give it a go again!

I find myself thinking "women" as I design my jewelry, so it was very interesting to think of making some of my regular designs more manly. Simply changing the shape, size or color of a stone can be the key!

I don't like the idea of having to work from a tutorial.

Becky,
I think I know how you feel - maybe restricted in design? The thought behind this is to encourage skill development. There are many free tutorials on the site that teach basic skills and many others that teach technique. I hope this helps explain why the challenge is set up to use a tutorial.

Some ideas for those of you who would lean towards using free lessons as a basis for this challenge:
Try the Stamped Mica Shift polymer clay lesson in copper or silver clay, for a more masculine look. For the stamp, choose one that has a strong geometric design, or use texture tools such as philips head screw drivers to make a more masculine design in the clay before the shaving step. Then use the free lesson on how to make straight holes so you can turn your creation into a bead or pendant suitable for a masuline necklace or bracelet. If you are using silver metalic clay, you can darken it with no more than 50% black to get closer to a gun metal color. I hope that helps folks who want to experiment on a low budget!

I was also thinking maybe sandstone or hemitite.

Oh wow this is going to probably sound really dumb, but how do I submit my project for this. I am kinda new to Jewelry Lessons, new because I have never gotten involved before. I have just realized how much you all rock. This webb site has given me confidence that I too have something to share. I am even working on a tutorial. So, fathers day bring it on. Thanks so very much for all that share here. Janet
Hey Janet,
Sorry, I forgot to put that in the article! Upload your pix in the Gallery. Under Categories, select JL.coms Expressions and under Subcategories, select May 2009: For Him. I will modify the article, too.

I have seen that this event has not been easy for many of us but that is why it is a challenge.
We have recieved few tutorials about how to make a ring for a man. This is a good gide for you to make your first "jewelry for him".
Fathers day is just around the corner. You still have time to be creative and make that special piece for him.
