Superbly well thought out article
Yes it is superbly well thought out - I've faved this page in my browser for sure! Bravo Eni! Thanks! Juli ;)
Congrats! Must have been hard work to mastermind this article, thank you, dearest founder! Did I already utter my opinion that this is a great site? Due to the general orderliness and the well stuctured "regime", which is visible in structure and layout. I am thankful to know now the fundamental thoughts that describe the philosophy of this system.
But... (there's always a small "but", if one starts thinking ;-))
In some ways this article leaves me full of questions. Some lines seemed to be addressed especially to me, telling me where my place is - or should be. Please let me try to explain, with a wink now and then!
As a novice, I am by nature a creature somewhere between a humble crawling bug who in awe adores the masters' art and skills, and an eager puppy, tailwagging and wanting to play with the biggers. I find it still hard to know my place in that scheme. I have not too many questions at hand, because I have read really a tremendous heap of all kind of information on the web, "studying" the theory of jewelry making from the start. And before I ever post a question, I first use the search engine and my big archive of bookmarked jewelry sites on the computer, or I try to figure it out by trial and error all by myself, after doing the research.
Mainly, I lack the practical experience, I wish I had more time to train my skills; but that's not easy to accomplish, with three little kids (7, 5 and 2), the fourth in the making (10 weeks until delivery date) and there always seems to be flu season...
I have only fabricated a hundred pieces, more or less, the myriads of earrings not counted, and I am still in the stage where I am copying and varying other people's great designs; and there are lots and lots of them, especially since I found this site. (Nearly) all the "jewelry making celebs" from everywhere, whose blogs and sites I devoured, congregating in one virtual spot - HERE!
But concerning theory, I am not soooo new. And I got some answers, sometimes, too! That's the point where your article unsettled me. Shall I? May I? Post answers, if I know something for sure, be it from reliable source, be it from own experience (like the "Using dremel to polish stones"-stuff)? Being a mere novice? Your article says I may. How should I make progress if I didn't, though.
I am nearly ashamed of my actual works sometimes (compared to all the wonderful advanced pieces I can admire here), even if I was encouraged for my first and only posting of a simple beadstrung necklace - thanks for that, btw!
Recently, I discovered the empty echoing halls of "Beginner's Corner", and there I will hide (for a rather short time, I think) and lick my wounds that your elaborate article inflicted on my sensitive newbie artist's soul . *lol* I will try and fill those empty spaces with some life and pictures.
And I'll keep on fighting with the difficulies of inventing the adequate (simple, but not crafty) designs for making those beautiful genuine jade carvings I collected into some kind of wearable, feng-shui inspired art.
Going to improve my photographic skills, first, then I'll surprise you all with the fruits of my efforts - hey, I'd rather like to call it "labour" *g*- and maybe climb the next step and become... a THINKER!
Thanks for listening, thanks for all the encouragement I get here, thanks for the (did I already mention it?!) GREAT SITE!

Hi,
I am trying to find out how to get points through buying tutorials. I have bought two but have zero points.
Sorry for the silly question.
Spider
(I just love this website!!!)
just found the right info. Thank you!
Jutta, thanks for the wonderful comments. YES, please do post questions, post articles, post any content that you may find useful to the community. One important thing to remember is that... ALL the teachers here were one day beginners and we all went through similar growing pains. The motto of the site is: Learn, Share, Teach, Earn. THE FIRST one is LEARN, noticed? Only after that, you can share what you have learned with others. So keep working hard an in no time, you will find yourself in the position of being able to share with others.

Spider, I'm glad you are enjoying the website! However, buying tutorials will not get you points. Userpoints are only earned if you contribute to the site, by posting tutorials, articles, tips and answers. Meaning, when you contribute something that benefits OTHERS you earn points!
Thanks again,
-Eni

I think you need to pat yourself on the back for what you HAVE learned. That means you are not standing still. To learn ANYTHING with a crew as big as yours at home deserves applause, and trust me once you hang around awhile you will hear all that applause. The folks on this site are fair, giving caring people.I have a novice status because im not to fast at getting in there and getting the pieces made.Im so loving this site,i spend waaaayyy to much time reading, commenting, etc.Try looking at it like this-your 7 year old has and area she needs to improve on in school-you work hard to help her-before mom thinks its a good time-a teacher says-lets bump her up a grade. You who know her best, dont think this is the time-she is still bumped up-she struggles and gets all confused and you know why-other direction example-she excells in her class she is bored and it hurting her-she needs to move up a grade-You know her best-thank God you have a teacher who evaluates the situation which means your input included-she moves up at the right time. You are moving up,but dont even think about the discriptive word.Got to call it something right? Its just a word.Hope that made sense :0)You will fly on this site.the other levels higher or novice, are no better than myself a novice, they are just at a different place in their work.Hmm how do i get better? The TEACHERS they will guide me so i dont say to heck with this and quit. You (i assume with little ones)cannot crank out several pieces a week!!!Good lord girl like i said in the beginning give yourself a pat for managing to compleat ANYTHING.People like me, the novice, are not being put at the back of the class i feel. When i dig in and start producing,i just know the teachers on here will be all over me to help.who wants to teach the folks who already know how???You and i are why they are here. What would make me drop out?If i felt some kinda pressure to hurry, keep up,produce,be timed etc.Im right where i want to be- for now. Some night when you want easy brain food, just sit and read the questions by others and how they are answered.Im glad you are here with us.Its an awesome family.WELCOME!!!!!!!

Eni, thank you for this article that explains things so well. Now I just have to strive for master status, which is more likely to happen if I can get my shop open and begin doing the work I am actually skilled at -- like soldering. I will get better at PMC once I can work with the stuff whenever I want. Then I can begin to write more tutorials and help teach basic techniques in soldering and PMC. Fun! I love to learn and I love to share what knowledge I have. :)

I agree with Pat, Jutta. With three small children and a 4th on the way, I am amazed you get ANYTHING done! I struggle with a 6-year-old and a 2-year-old, and the older one is gone half the day! you should be commended for even trying. Keep at it and you will learn. This site will help you a lot -- there are lots of wonderful tutorials out there, and the instructors are always open to answering questions if you have them. Eni has designed a superb site for anyone who wants to learn and anyone who wants to share their knowledge. Dig in and enjoy it -- and love on those kids while you can -- they sure grow up fast! :)
