Back to Basics - Handwrapping Coils

Uploaded on: Jan 03, 2009
Level: Beginner
Description:

In many projects, it is useful to make simple coils separately (off the main work) as well as coiling continuously. The most basic reason is the ability to obtain accurate measurements. There are challenges with both methods. This tutorial gives methods for creating neat, even coils no matter how you work.

Hi ShaktiPaj! Basics are the best way to learn & understand the mechanics of the fine art of wire jewelry sculpture! Great instructions with accompanying pix! Thanks! Juli ;)

Hi Perri,
I can't stop slapping my forehead... How naive could I be???? This tutorial is a true revelation to me, having thought before that coiling "in situ" is an inevitable part of the challenge of making wire jewelry, cursing and kinking the wire all inclusive... OMG, don't know whether to laugh or cry about my stupidity :-D
Guess everyone else knew about it beforehand - but now I know, too! I feel so thankful and enlightened by your advise.
BTW, your pics and detailed instructions are indeed as wonderful as your wirework!
Jutta

Thank you so much, Jutta! You really don't know how special your compliment is! Stop slapping yourself, and start laughing and dancing - because this isn't something that most wire folks do on a regular basis! My students at home are pleasantly surprised when I show them. I have a few who formed what they laughingly call "The Wrapping Cheater's Club". They alll act like they have a secret that nobody else does. Maybe they do.....LOLOL

This tutorial is just what I have been hoping for! What may be obvious to others often eludes me. Thanks for the information including tips.

Hannahbee

You are truly welcome, Hannahbee! These things elude all of us at one point or another. It is easy to forget as teachers. My husband (who is a Math Prof.) and I trade stories on just this subject.
I think being able to look backward in your efforts and clearly see how you felt or understood things in an earlier time is invaluable!
Both of us remind one another to put ourselves in our students' shoes as much as possible!

How can someone who shares so much not have a 5 star rating, Well, I send you my 5 stars You are a star in my book, You Rock, Hugs Hugs Hugs, Pam

Many thanks, Pam! I'm grateful for your rating, and very glad you got some good from it. But others have to judge on their personal scale, too. I'm just happy to hear that at some point in the future, Eni would like to institute way to give more focused anonymous feedback. Then, maybe all of us can produce 5 star tutorials, all the time! Wouldn't THAT be great!

Ya know Perri, the star system seems to be a hinderence to me lately. I post something and either my pictures are too small, or are blurry, and now too colorful, I say that with kind regards, I was having fun with colors learning my editing software I just aquired.
But when I post a project and I see one person vote and I get 1 star, I think , is it really that bad, heheheheh. I stopped looking at the star ratings anymore being a beginner to the art of weaving etc that I am learning on here.
I DO let everyone I see commenting on my questions they all get 5 stars just for taking the time to look at my projects and comment, because it takes time to comment, and time is what all of us don't have enough of these days, or should I say years, hehehe.
Anyway, I started reading into the stars and I found my motivation become a little negative, and then I read a comment and it is so inspiring, but there is only 1 star up on the page. I thought, is this the person who gave me the 1 star??? Then I thought, the boasting in the comment, and the 1 star didn't relate to me in a positive way reading into it. It is confusing and really I found I wasn't as creative that day.
Then their was a post that had a almost 5 star rating and I watched it with excitement,Then I forgot about it, and when I went back a very long time later, the star system went down, so I was like, Hmmmm, did I make people upset and they took the ratings back hehehhee.
I got worked up to the point I just don't look at the star rating anymore. I do boast for others to use the star system to give credit where credit is due, especially when someone goes out of their way to give a free tutorial.
The new members and beginners on here really do appreciate the sentiments and when they don't get the recognition for their efforts I say something to help their ratings to go up.
Everything on this site is geared towards the creativity and learning most of all, at least in my eyes, being a beginner myself.
But I have been told by some beginners that don't want to comment being bashful or whatever. I try my hardest to what I call, PAY IT FORWARD, and of course it makes me feel good to help others for sure.
So for the star ratings, its in my honest opinion sort of a competition getter, and although I am not being sexist or anything towards the men in here, but when you get a bunch of women together and there is competition, I know only too well, especially in the competitions of my career for too many years as a cosmetologist and salon owner for 28yrs, that women tend to handle competitions in their own little ways and offenses occur, or something is done to noticed in a way that it could be translated in the wrong way .
I am not saying that is what is going on here, so please don't read into that statement, My sentiment is more like a worry, these days with some of the posts and me being out of the loop with the flu, it does make me worry sometimes and my ambitions get effected by that.
I was always the happy go lucky, let it be, type person , life is short and I know only too well, a star really doesn't show a person a positive experience, nor a negative one, its just stars.
Now there was a day in the beginning of me being here, that I saw stars and everyone thought I had a terrible eye disease, but that was different, wink hehehhehehhe. So to the stars, they belong in the sky, and the sky is the limit to my creating, and that is what counts wouldn't you say!!! Constructive criticism doesn't hurt, but only gives a better strive to do better. I take it as a gift, so it would be nice to have that way to anonymously give that type of comments with words, so you don't have to read into the stars, hehehhe. First I was seeing stars, now I am speaking them, No I dont have a mouth disease, hehehehehhehe. I just agree with you whole heartedly. Thank you so much for this tut, it truly is a very informative tut and so well written. Your work is so inspiring as well. Hugs to you, Your creating friend, Pam

Oh by the way, I play 12 string guitar so I have plenty of G strings. Pun intended, as a joke, Hugs, Pam haahhahaa, I am really laughing and I woke my hubby, it's 2 am here, the only time I can get online these days with insomnia, and the flu, Ok gonna go to bed now before I get into trouble. cya, Pam

Thanks for the comment, Pam! I really think that you are speaking for many people. And you know that you are so very welcome!
Your pun could have been worse: (or better, depending on how much you like puns!) You could have said that you have a husband, so you have plenty of G-strings - Oh, and you play guitar too! LOLOLOLOL Hugs back at ya!

Excellent tutorial. I would not have thought to use a sewing needle as a mandrel in the smaller gauges. Nice tip!

Thanks, Indigo! What they say about necessity being the mother of invention is true - when you are desperate for the right tool and it can't seem to be found, you just use what you have! It helps to break down the specific attributes of what you need. In this case, something hard, cylindrical, and very small in diameter. A needle was the first thing that popped up for me!

Oh my gosh, I'm SO excited I read this. The needle mandrel is brilliant. I have tried using full hard wire and have always wondered how to make things easier!! Thank you SO SO SO much Perri for sharing your wisdom. SO generous!!

P.S. huge admirer of your work for a long time. :)

This is awesome -- I wondered how to make the little coils for ear wires. Now I know and it will save me mega bucks. I'll make my own ear wires (I was doing it anyway, but now they will look more professional).

Thank you Perri for this great tutorial!!!

Thanks again Perri, for a wonderful tutorial. I used it to make my own ear wires with coils and to make a toggle clasp like my customers have been requesting but I could not previously afford. It was fun learning to do this, and I'm pretty proud of my clasp that I did without a tutorial or anything. :)
