Description:

In this tutorial I will show you how to make a simple soldered sterling silver band using a small butane torch and basic tools. This is a great project for the beginner, even if you’ve never soldered before. It will give you the fundamentals you will need to continue learning basic soldering. I will walk you step by step though making a silver band with a hammered texture that has been oxidized and polished in a tumbler.
This tutorial is 18 pages long and has over 30 photos.
I will talk to you about different materials you can start with, options in finishing, texturing, polishing and I will give you a chart that will show you how to determine the amount of material you will need to achieve a certain size ring. The chart shows North American, European and UK sizes with measurements in millimeters and inches.

Where do I get the fine grit sandpaper? All I've been able to find is 400 and 600.

Any hardware or automotive store should have it. It's called wet or dry sand paper and is most commonly used on wood or metal. I can buy it by the sheet at my local Home Hardware store.

Darn... none around here have any. What about putting it on your rotary tool? Do you buy them that way or do you just wrap them around? Thanks!

i just wrap it around and use a piece of tape to hold it.

i just did a quick google search and here are a couple links to sandpaper http://www.clayalley.com/sandpaper.htm

is there a hobby shop in town. They usually have it too.

I finally found a wood working shop that had some. Thanks! This was a great tutorial. I think next time I will use an 18 or 16 gauge instead of 20.

I would love to see more in the student work gallery!
