Post a Tip about this Tutorial

It would be nice to know the length of the finished unit of byzantine. It would be helpful in ordering enough rings for a project

You are most correct. I'll fix that asap. Thank you!
Karen

Well the ideal aspect ratio for 2 conector Byzantine is 3.5, so the number of rings in a standard bracelet(seven inches) will change with both the diameter of the rings and the gauge of the wire. I just did one with 2.8mm ID rings in 20ga wire ( .8mm diameter)...that required 200 rings for the bracelet and the clasp. Remember...AR = ID/WD (inside diameter/wire diameter)

Does this use soldered or open rings? I would love to do byzantine, but the thought of soldering all those rings is very daunting.

Dawn

Dawn, I never use soldered rings in my chainmaille for that very reason. If the rings are appropriately sized for the weave then they will be strong enough to hold together under normal wear and tear without being soldered.

Hope that helps!

Karen

Great, in that case I am willing to give it a try!

Dawn

Kaelynn, do you use half hard or soft wire for the rings in this tutorial? How many does it take?

Dawn

Well, it depends. If I'm using wire of 18g or smaller, I use half hard wire for strength. If I'm using 16g or larger wire, soft wire is strong enough. As to how many rings it takes, once again that depends. For a beginner, I'd recommend using 18g 3.5mm rings of which you would need 26 rings to complete an inch of chain. Does that help? :)

Karen

Yes, except my only 18g wire is half hard, and I don't think I have the strength to bend it. I will probably use 20g half hard, if I have enough of that. That does give me a bit of an idea though. Wow, that is nearly 500 rings for an 18 inch chain!
