TUTORIAL:

Herringbone Twist Cuff Bracelet

Uploaded on: Apr 21, 2009
Level: Advanced
Description:

With this lesson you will learn how to create what I call the Herringbone Twist design in wire. I call it the Herringbone Twist because the design resembles Herringbone Tweed. I have incorporated this design in a lovely and versatile Cuff Bracelet. In this lesson you will also learn how to size your bracelet, about power tools, Liver of Sulfur and many other techniques that you can use in other projects. I have updated this tutorial with the measurements in Metric as well as inches.
CREDITS: This design is a combination of techniques that I have learned throughout the years of creating jewelry from wire. I have not seen the techniques I used to make the focal wires in the center of the bracelet before although I do know you can buy the wire pre-made in that design. I am not aware if there is an original creator of this design. I came upon the idea quite by accident, which oftentimes is the case when doing anything creative.

Hi Dawn,
Thanks for the comment, don't underestimate yourself, I've seen some of the things you've posted and your doing great. Keep up the good work!
Pat...............

Pat - I have been waiting for this tutorial!! It is like all of your work - simple with clean lines and infinately variable. Thanks GLO

Thank You Glo! For all the kind words and support. I had a feeling when it was in Today's Top Tutorials that it would only be a day or so before it got to the Tutorial page. So here it is and I hope you enjoy making your bracelet. :-D
Pat..............

The copper version caught my eye when you posted it in the Gallery. When I say "caught my eye," I mean I really was fascinated and infatuated. I have been enjoying all of your work, it is all so elegant and prefectly executed. I did not expect to see a tut of this one, and yet, here it is and I am THRILLED! I am not quite sure about my skill level yet, but I look forward to the day when I can make this amazingly cool bracelet.
By the way, what is a wire-twisting tool? I think I know but am not quite sure.

Arya

Yes I really liked the way the Copper version turned out also. One of the things that's so nice about this design is that there are so many variations and things you can do to it to make it look different. I do another version that combines the Classic Cabochon Ring with this bracelet. With just a few adjustment and changes in measurements you have a completely different looking bracelet. Thanks again Arya for your kinds words.
Pat................. :-D
Oh! A "wire twisting tool" is my way of saying that you can choose any tool that will twist multiple wires. Not a pin vise though, a pin vise is used to twist a single wire, mostly square wire. In the tutorial I use a power tool but there is also a manual tool that I show you in the tutorial just in case you don't feel comfortable using a power tool.

Thank you, Pat! That you show it in the tutorial is very helpful.
Arya

I've been waiting for this tutorial also. Thanks Pat, your bracelets are just amazing.

Thanks Cas, for the kind words, I've been asked for this tutorial for some time now I'm so glad I finally did it! Eventually I will do a tutorial on the matching ring. :-D
Pat.............. :-D

Love this Bracelet! It looks like a great layering piece to wear with your other jewelry for a fun, modern look. Love it Pat, Thanks!..............

Thanks lizbeth, I wear mine with my watch and it looks great. My daughter wears hers with the beaded bracelets that she designs. You are right on about the layering, thanks for the the support! Pat.............;-D

Hi, Pat...I saw a photo of the ring that goes with this bracelet, I think on your website? Any chance you will make a tutorial for the ring? :)

Hi Tadaosgirl, thanks for the request. I love that ring ;-D I wear all the time. with the bracelet it makes a stunning set. It's a strong and sturdy ring. Yes I do have a nice photo of it on my website and there is also a photo of it on the 3rd page of my gallery on my profile page featured with the bracelet. I though about writing a tutorial for the ring if the bracelet went well but the bracelet has only had a moderate response. Now that your asking for a tutorial I will defiantly consider it after I finish the next projects on my list. I'll keep you posted thanks again for the request.
Pat.............. :-D

Thank You Albfalco, thats great you could make a his and hers versions. Did you see the variation with the Cab Ring attached to the top? Check out the student work Gallery at the top of the page on the right. I hope you enjoy making and wearing this bracelet.
Sincerely Pat.................:-D

Pat, you mentioned that the bracelet had only a moderate response. I've looked at it a couple of times but, shallow person that I am, I was put off by the butterfly; not a butterfly kinda girl and not experienced enough to see beyond it. ;-) However, I just downloaded the new tut, the Two-in-One, and will be getting this one, too. Sometimes I just need a kick in the butt to shake my brain loose. Thanks for these great tutorials; I'll be watching for the ring version now.

Hi Kate,
I'm happy you took another look. :-D The butterfly is a charm that you attach to the bracelet as an embellishment. It can interchange with almost any other charm or don't use it at all. The tutorial for the ring is on the following link http://www.jewelrylessons.com/tutorial/twist-knot-ring I hope you enjoy making the Two into One :-D and have a look at the ring it matches both bracelets. Thanks for posting.
Pat............ :-}
