This is a tutorial on how to make your own Maasai Shield pendant. The Maasai Shield is a shield made from cowhide and usually painted. It is a warrior shield from Kenya. when I first made this piece someone said it looked like a Maasai shield, so I decided to name it that.

Material List:
  • 18 inches of 18 gauge dead soft wire. (I used copper but also have used half hard sterling for this style piece)
  • 7 feet of 24 gauge wire dead soft. (I used copper for this as well )
  • 30- 3mm round copper beads (or other 3mm beads you are using)
  • 11- 2 mm sterling silver round beads
  • 5- 24 gauge headpins in any metal you choose
  • 6- 2.5mm sterling silver round beads
  • 4 3-4mm Bali spacer beads
Tool List:
  • Round nose pliers
  • Chain nose pliers
  • Flush cutter or other wire cutter
  • Hammer or mallet
  • Bench block or other hard surface for hammering
  • Knitting needle or pen or other object to use as mandrel

Wonderful tutorial Jamaica! I love it...Very nicely done. Spike has some prototype shield cabs on his bench - might just have to swipe one, and combine it with this, hmmmm
