TUTORIAL:

Ornate Double-Terminated Focal/Clasp

Uploaded on: Jul 28, 2009
Level: Advanced
Description:

This tutorial teaches you step by step the techniques needed to create the Cab-Top Invisible Clasp, along with variations that include the Multi-Strand Bracelet, the Watch-Top Invisible Clasp, and the Ornate Focal Clasp for necklaces.

This is an advanced tutorial, though if you’re comfortable in the basic skills set, the steps are detailed enough a patient intermediate level wire worker can accomplish these projects.

This tutorial is a progression of the Swarovski Crystal Bracelet http://www.jewelrylessons.com/tutorial/swarovski-crystal-bracelet. It assumes you either have that tutorial, or are familiar with that style of bracelet. Only the modifications to the ends of the bracelets to fasten to the Cab Top Clasp are covered, not the entire Swarovski Crystal Bracelet tutorial.
When finished the Cab Top creates a nearly INVISIBLE clasp.

Please don't be intimidated by the number of steps - This tutorial covers 4 fully illustrated variations.

Many, many thanks to Perri J ShaktipajDesigns for her continued support, friendship, and wisdom.

Hi Bobbi!
So if I want to add this type of clasp to, let's say, an existing bracelet or to some other design I'm making, I wont need to also buy the crystal bangle tutorial? There's enough in this tut to enable me to attach this top cab to something else? If so, that's awesome, because that's what I really need.
Theresa

Hi Theresa!
No you don't have to buy the Swarovski Crystal tutorial. This design is a progression of that piece, but is in no way limited to it. The tutorial includes several variations on different ways to use it, and attach it to an almost infinite number of designs. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any bracelet design it wouldn't easily adapt to. You can contact me directly if you like, if you have want to discuss what you have in mind, just to make sure. :)

This looks so pretty! I'm thinking of giving it a try. Is the clasp very difficult to open/close by the wearer alone? (i.e. Do you need someone to hold the bracelet on while someone else helps to fasten the clasp?)

Thanks,
dsal

Bobbi, I sure will send you a photo of my project when I get to it. I have so many ideas in my head right now. I just love the whole crystal bangle design, but I know I have a hard time wearing stiff cuffs or bangles. I find them uncomfortable, albeit gorgeous. So I'm considering putting this clasp on a segmented bracelet (3 joints, maybe, segments are bent to fit my arm) and I want the watch on it. I just have to find one that fits and is water proof. I tend to hop in the shower with all my jewelry on, or start cooking (my job) and getting my hands all messy. I must be able to clean it, too.
Theresa

Hi dsal - The clasp is not difficult at all to open and close. The way its constructed, you push down on the bracelet end to fasten it, and to unhook it, you push down on the cab. And though I just made it sound easy to hook/unhook, its fairly secure while wearing it. It won't just fall off. Hope that helps....

Theresa - A segmented bracelet sounds great! In the listing look at the Purple bracelet. I used the clasp/focal like a multi-strand bracelet spacer. I only did 2-strands, but you can easily modify the end loops for additional strands. You're like me on the watch part - I never take any of my jewelry off either.

I'm HIGHLY intimidated. That's why I haven't yet purchased this tutorial. You say it's advanced, but doable "if you are comfortable with basic skills." I've found my skills improve when I stretch them and try something outside my comfort zone, but ... is this tutorial detailed enough for someone with my "advanced beginner" skills? I've been able to follow some of your other tutorials, but this looks difficult. What do you think?

Hi Sandy!
Please don't be intimidated! It may look complicated, but that's part of the illusion of a hidden clasp, and each step is clearly illustrated with at least one photo, and in many cases 2, so that you fully understand the steps. If you've tried some of my other tutorials with success, especially the Swarovski Crystal bracelet, you should have no trouble with this one. AND if you do hit a snag - I'm always available to help you with it - just PM me here on JL or write me at bobbiwired@gmail.com. Please let me know if you have any more questions, I really am happy to help!!!

Sandy, I've had the pleasure of working with this tutorial. :^)) Here is a question to help you - (I hope you don't mind, Bobbi!)Are you comfortable with a 'basic' border wrap pendant? If so, Bobbi has provided the extra instructions to build your skill level so that this project is well within your grasp.
The watch face version has a few extras, but still within the skill designation.
And I know Bobbi means what she says: she is available for help should you need it!

Hope this helps you,
Perri

Thank you Miss Perri, and I don't mind at all!!!That's an excellent point about borders wraps - if you're comfortable with those techniques, than you're ready to take the next step with these techniques.....

Having purchased this tutorial some time ago I still haven't had the time to use it but I was hoping you could tell me where I could buy a watch that would be suitable, all of the ones I have or have seen don't have enough room on the back to make this do-able according to your instructions.

Hi Dazzled - I looked the last time I was at Walmart at some of the inexpensive watches there, and quite a few worked. It's hard to buy them online, because most of them don't show the back. Your local bead store should carry a few too! If you could find one that still winds up, then the back won't be a problem.
