Post a Tip about this Tutorial

This worked very well.

Thanks, Cristina. Good point - I don't like using chemicals either so I will have to try this. Funny that liver of sulfur smells likes eggs!

I'm glad you found this helpful! This actually works because there's sulfur in the vapors that come off the egg yolk! So maybe sulfur is what gives the egg that distinctive smell

What a fabulous tutorial & idea.
I'm so pleased that I found it & can't wait to try it.
Thank You.

That was wonderful....I heard from someone else there was another way...your directions are clear and to the point. Thanks

This is great to know. Thank You Dawn

I absolutely HATE using LOS....the smell! Gag! And even storing it (one time I quickly stuck it in a ziploc and put it inside another bag, not realizing that the silver bracelet I wear was inside the bag because I had taken it off)....and it was so black when I finally found out, just because it was in the bag. Ugh! Using an egg is so much more homeopathic and non-toxic. Thanks for willingly sharing this info for free! What a wonderful thing to know. Leslie

Dad gum it I just bought liver of sulphur recently! This is a great tutorial; the less chemicals used the better for me. Thanks so much for sharing it with us!

Cool idea. I'm definitely willing to give this a try. Thanks!

I have always used the LOS but last night I had just a bit of chain to patina so I tried this method. It worked very well. I will continue to use it for small projects when I want a a blackened patina and use the LOS when I want to get more colours in the patina, like pinks, purples etc. .

Thanks you tutorial, its very clear. I went to the beads store today. Because this was to do with a boiled egg I did'nt get it.

I've been telling customers at the store where I work to check this out as an alternative to LOS or Jax Black. People just don't want to use chemicals anymore. Thanks for the great info!

I've been concerned about exposing my beads to treatments, thanks for your lesson!

this is great, thanks for posting... does this work for silver plated things???

Thank you all for your kind comments.
Yes, it will work on silver plated things. If you are planning to clean up some of the oxidation afterwards, I'd be very careful as some of the plating may come off from the cleaning process.

What's the best way to clean your piece afterwards(smell)?

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I've been wanting to try oxidizing silver but didn't like the idea of using chemicals. I can't wait to try this!
Kathy

You're welcome, I'm glad you've found it helpful!
I have never had a problem with the smell before, is your jewelry having that problem? Try rinsing it off with a bit of soapy water.

shaktipaj's tips are EXCELLENT as well! Thanks!

This was so helpful! Using silver black I always had to do each bit of silver separately because it literally eats pearls for breakfast. Now, I just throw the finished piece in and viola!

thanks! that is amazing. and helpful.

Thank you so much for posting this. A friend of mine asked me how to do this before, and now I could tell her what to do!! Thank you for sharing!
